USS Hornet

This is the USS Hornet (CVS-12) that I painted at the now decomissioned Naval Air Station in Alameda CA. (NAS Alameda.) The Hornet played a historic role as she picked up the Apollo 11 Astronauts in 1969. President Nixen was on board to welcome the weary space travelers home.

Unfortunatly the Sikorsky SeaKing SH-3D helicopter that retrieved the capsule is now sitting at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of San Diego. At the time this bird was assigned to the Helicopter Anti-submarine Warfare Squadron Four (HS-4.)

I have stent the past two weeks painting on board The Uss. Hornet and I would recomend everyone to come visit the Museum and meet the handful of dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers who are keeping this national treasure alive.
